The Dragonfly Story

Impacts of Conductive Hearing Loss

While the impact of conductive hearing loss / otitis media is widely recognised, these conditions may still go undetected. This may be due to:

  • difficulty with recognising signs and symptoms;
  • limited access to support personnel, particularly in remote communities, and
  • children developing coping strategies to mask difficulties they are experiencing.

A prolonged conductive hearing loss may lead to some or all of the following:

  • speech and learning delays;
  • behavioural problems; and
  • permanent hearing loss.

In chronic cases of otitis media a child’s hearing ability rarely returns to normal. This will have a significant impact on a child’s social, physical, emotional and educational development. For more information about these impacts of CHL / OM, visit the Learning with CHL / OM  section.
