The name Otitis Media comes from the Greek word Otitis which means inflammation of the ear and the Latin word Media which means middle, from this we get the term middle ear infection. You may already be familiar with the term middle ear infection, as CHL/OM isn’t just a child’s diseases, adults can also experience it. However CHL/OM is much more common in children if their immune systems are not as well developed as they are in adults. CHL/OM can affect children from a few days old to their teenage years and sometimes beyond. Research has shown as many as 75% of all children in Australia will have at least one episode of CHL/OM by the time they are 3 years of age. If we consider Australian Indigenous children alone, studies have shown up to 80% have experienced CHL/OM any given day.
