The Dragonfly Story

Literacy – Onset

An onset may consist of a single consonant such as the letter “t” or as a consonant blend such as “tr”. To learn to read and spell requires that children are able to recognise words that begin with the same sound.

While identifying words with the same onset may seem like a simple task, children with conductive hearing loss may have difficulty hearing these sounds.  This will result in children experiencing difficulties learning to read and spell.  Children with a history of conductive hearing loss must be given plenty of practice in the recognition of the onset in spoken words.
